This session will include a presentation, highlighting the pivotal role of MUSIC (Model for Urban Stormwater Improvement Conceptualization) software in enhancing water-sensitive urban Design (WSUD) practices. It will also showcase how MUSIC supports stormwater modelling by simulating pollutant generation and treatment of WSUD features such as wetlands and bioretention. Attendees will learn how MUSIC aids in evaluating various WSUD strategies, ensuring regulatory compliance, providing decision support, and promoting effective stormwater management and sustainable urban development.
The 60-minute session will include a short presentation by eWater’s Dr Mukta Sapkota, followed by Q&A with attendees. A certificate of CPD can be provided to attendees upon request

This is Session #2 of the 2025 ‘Stormwater Fundamental’ series, and focusses on stormwater channel design.
In this session, presented by Sean Quilty (Director of Quilty Engineering Hub), you will learn the fundamentals of Stormwater Channel Design, with a special focus on Manning’s equation – a key tool in hydraulic design. We start with the basics, explaining each component of the equation, before moving on to a detailed worked example that connects theory to practical real-world scenarios. Additionally, we’ll cover important considerations such as maintenance, scour, and freeboard to ensure your designs are both efficient and sustainable.
The 60-minute session will include a short presentation by Sean, followed by Q&A with attendees. A certificate of CPD can be provided to attendees upon request.

This topic is large and complicated, but well worth knowing. It could be a full day’s worth of training, but Optimal Stormwater’s Murray Powell will do his best to summarise all the main points they think you need to consider into a 20-minute information injection!
Good stormwater pollution control starts with planning, street sweeping, and erosion control, it progresses to spill control, pit traps and other source preventative measures. Once it is in a stormwater system, you’re maybe looking at baskets, nets, trash racks or one of dozens of GPTs. We’ll discuss technologies, MUSIC and maintenance, and the key things that will give you the best chance of getting the outcomes you want.
The 60-minute session will include a short presentation by Murray, followed by Q&A with attendees. A certificate of CPD can be provided to attendees upon request.

– media filters, upflow porous paver filters, and ultra fine screen filtration
– tree pits, raingardens, bioretention, swales
– wetlands.
Murray will discuss the technologies, flow rates, removal efficiencies, reliability and (of course) maintenance for each treatment. He’ll quickly cover both the pro’s and con’s of each solution, and make some general recommendations.
The 60-minute session will include a short presentation by Murray, followed by Q&A with attendees. A certificate of CPD can be provided to attendees upon request.

Filterra bioretention system is very similar to ‘conventional’ biofiltration systems (using ‘sandy loam’ filter media). A key difference, however, is that Filterra bioretention systems utilise a filter media blend that can treat flows at a significantly higher flow rate than typical biofiltration filter media. Filterra bioretention systems can also achieve local stormwater pollution reduction targets with significantly less area (typically 3 to 5 times less area) relative to conventional biofiltration systems.
This session will provide an overview of high flow (Filterra) bioretention systems, including how they work, case studies, performance monitoring data, government approvals, and maintenance requirements.
The 60-minute session will include a short presentation by Ocean Protect’s Brad Dalrymple and Harout Tcherkezian, followed by Q&A with attendees. A certificate of CPD can be provided to attendees upon request.

RFCS technologies are one of the most commonly applied asset type for the removal of pollutants from stormwater, with over 36,000 installed across Australia alone. RFCS technologies utilise one or more media types to capture and adsorb pollutants from stormwater such as suspended solids, hydrocarbons, nutrients, metals and other common pollutants – and their design and implementation has been developed by Contech and Ocean Protect based on over twenty years of research and development, testing and field monitoring.
This session will provide an overview of RFCS technologies, including how they work, performance monitoring data, government approvals, application, and maintenance requirements.
The 60-minute session will include a short presentation by Ocean Protect’s Peter Worth and Brad Dalrymple, followed by Q&A with attendees. A certificate of CPD can be provided to attendees upon request.

As GPT asset owners, particularly Councils, grapple with limited budgets and growing environmental responsibilities, maintaining these devices often becomes a significant challenge. This presentation delves into the core issue of how water disposal drives up maintenance costs and limits the frequency of GPT cleaning. With the potential of pollution entering our waterways due to budget constraints, the question arises: “Can dewatering GPTs onsite be a viable solution?”
Join Optimal Stormwater’s Dan Rhodes as he explores the complexities of onsite dewatering, discussing the benefits, risks, and the EPA’s stance on the matter. This presentation will provide practical insights and strategies for asset owners to increase cleaning frequency and improve environmental outcomes, all while minimising costs.
Key topics include:
– The impact of water disposal costs on GPT maintenance
– Onsite dewatering as a cost-saving measure, with mitigation strategies
– Case studies of successful (and not-so-successful) dewatering efforts
– Alternatives like regional decanting facilities to further mitigate risks.
Attend this session to learn how to optimise GPT maintenance, achieve better environmental outcomes, and make budget-friendly decisions without compromising compliance.
The 60-minute session will include a short presentation by Dan Rhodes, followed by Q&A with attendees. A certificate of CPD can be provided to attendees upon request.

In this session, Ocean Protect’s Daniel Rider will go through the legal findings from the legal review conducted as part of the Water Sensitive Urban Design (WSUD) Maintenance Compliance Framework. This will look at legislation and the law in NSW, Queensland, Victoria, Tasmania, and South Australia.
For this review, the following questions will be explored:
– Is it illegal for Councils to not maintain public WSUD assets?
– Is it illegal for private landowners to not maintain their private WSUD assets?
– Is it illegal for Councils to not enforce maintenance on private WSUD assets?
– Are there things that Councils can put in place during development to require certain things from projects with WSUD systems?
– Are there existing legal mechanisms for Councils to use to enforce maintenance on private WSUD assets?
Daniel will go through the findings for these questions and outline how this affects stormwater management in Australia.
The 60-minute session will include a short presentation by Daniel, followed by Q&A with attendees. A certificate of CPD can be provided to attendees upon request.
