As part of a new residential development in Littlehampton, South Australia, a feature lake was proposed to enhance site amenity and urban cooling. While protecting the long-term health of the lake was a priority for the developer, maintaining downstream water quality was equally important. Drawing on our expertise, we delivered an innovative dual-action solution: stormwater treatment that achieves pollutant load removal targets and protects the water quality of the lake. The Challenge
The new development project needed to achieve Council stormwater pollutant load removal targets while protecting the lake from water quality issues.
A particular concern was the extended dry periods common to the area, which sometimes lead to extended residence times in the lake. Without appropriate management, this could increase the risk of algal blooms, reducing lake ecological and amenity values.
The Solution
Ocean Protect designed a ‘treatment train’ for the site, utilising Filterra® biofiltration systems as an alternative to a conventional biofiltration system. The solution also incorporates an OceanSave® GPT to pre-treat stormwater from the upstream catchment.
To further augment lake water quality, lake waters are intermittently recirculated back into the Filterra bioscape.
Integrated Treatment, Lasting Outcomes
By implementing an innovative recirculation and treatment strategy, the project has delivered a high-value asset for the local community.
This represents the first application of a Filterra® bioscape integrated to provide treatment to both stormwater and recirculated lake waters.
