For apartment developments, every square metre matters. This particular project left little room for a conventional treatment configuration, with the above-ground galvanised panel tank being the only option to house a treatment system.  

Ocean Protect looked at how the StormFilter® treatment system could adapt to the site, resulting in a one-of-a-kind installation. 

The Background

Galvanised panel tanks are commonly used for on-site detention in apartment developments. Their modular construction allows individual components to be transported through restricted basement and plant-room access points before being assembled on site. This makes the tanks particularly useful where space and access are constrained.  

For this project, however, the OSD tank also needed to accommodate the site’s tertiary stormwater treatment.  

Flexibility Beyond the Conventional

Ocean Protect supplied and installed three units of 690 StormFilter® cartridges containing PSorb media directly within the galvanised panel tank.  

 StormFilter® uses compact, media-filled cartridges to filter stormwater, providing a configuration that can be adapted to suit a wide range of site conditions. The cartridges can also be manoeuvred or swapped by hand without heavy machinery inside the tank structure. 

For this installation, the three cartridges were positioned on an aluminium tray within the tank. A purpose-built holder was constructed using a 300 mm stormwater cap filled with concrete, creating a secure base into which the StormFilter® cartridge spigot could be slotted. 

The resulting configuration enabled the required treatment technology to be incorporated directly into the OSD tank rather than requiring a conventional standalone StormFilter® arrangement. 

Swap-and-Go Media for Long-Lasting Value 

The cartridge-based system also provides a practical advantage when it comes time for maintenance. 

Rather than replacing the entire treatment asset, the media within individual StormFilter® cartridges can be renewed as required. Ocean Protect’s swap-and-go approach allows spent cartridges to be exchanged – freshly renewed media available locally in our Dandenong facility. 

This approach helps extend the service life of the treatment system while keeping ongoing maintenance practical and cost-effective.  

This case is certainly an unconventional application, but one that showcases an important principle behind StormFilter®: when space and access dictate the design, treatment technology needs to be flexible enough to follow.
