When site constraints make conventional solutions unworkable, smart design becomes crucial. That was the case for a project in Zillmere, Queensland, where Ocean Protect delivered its first custom-designed precast concrete vault in the state — a faster, more cost-effective alternative to an in-situ build. This vault will house 23 StormFilter® PSorb cartridges.
The Challenge
The project was originally specified with an in-situ constructed tank. However, as discussions progressed, it became clear that the design would be difficult to deliver on site. The tank needed to accommodate multiple existing stormwater pipes, along with new ones — an increasingly complex requirement that the in-situ solution could not practically resolve.
Recognising these constraints early allowed the project team to reassess the approach before construction began.
The Solution
Ocean Protect’s design team developed a custom precast concrete vault, purpose-designed to overcome the limitations of the original specification.
The vault was engineered using tilt panels and incorporated multiple internal compartments, allowing it to effectively house all existing and new stormwater pipework. This tailored approach not only solved the spatial and construction challenges but also delivered clear program and cost benefits.
Key features of the solution included:
- Specially designed by Ocean Protect’s in-house team
- Fully custom-built to suit site-specific constraints
- A more cost-effective alternative to an in-situ tank
- Significantly reduced installation time
Faster Installation, Better Outcomes
One of the standout advantages of the precast solution was the speed of installation. From the moment the vault arrived on site, installation took approximately one hour — from the back of the truck to placement in the ground. This represented a substantial reduction in time compared to an in-situ build.
A First for Queensland
This project represents Ocean Protect’s first custom-built precast vault to be manufactured, supplied, and installed in Queensland, demonstrating how flexible design thinking and prefabrication can unlock better outcomes when standard solutions fall short.
