A large-scale residential subdivision in Melrose Park North is shaping up to be one of Sydney’s most significant urban renewal projects. The project will transform an entire city block into a mixed-use precinct, complete with apartments, retail, dining, and direct access to the Parramatta Light Rail. With development of this scale comes a substantial stormwater management challenge, and that’s where OceanSave® GPT came in.
The Challenge
The precinct presented the kind of runoff complexity that demands a layered treatment approach. Road surfaces and pits across the subdivision generate stormwater carrying litter, sediment, hydrocarbons, and other pollutants, all of which needed to be managed before reaching the biofiltration systems already planned for the site.
The project required multiple pollution control systems operating across a range of peak flow rates, and council needed confidence that the chosen technology could meet the required treatment standards.
The Solution
CDS (continuous deflective screening) and Vortex technology were needed to pre-treat stormwater runoff ahead of the downstream biofiltration systems. Multiple units of the OceanSave® GPT in various sizes were selected to fulfil this role across several locations on site, and local council accepted the system with confidence.
The OceanSave® is a full-capture, high-capacity gross pollutant trap that combines vortex separation with indirect screening to remove litter, sediment, and hydrocarbons. Designed to capture particles greater than 1mm, its innovative internal configuration handles higher flows than comparable technologies, while preventing screen blinding.
Flexible Solutions, Lasting Outcomes
For a project like this, the flexibility of the OceanSave® system with varying pipe sizes, angles, and invert levels was a practical advantage. No special backfilling requirements meant the system could be installed on site in a single day.
The subdivision now has a robust, multi-point stormwater pre-treatment system in place, protecting its downstream biofiltration assets and meeting council’s water quality requirements for a development that will eventually serve thousands of residents.
