As part of a major upgrade to a bus depot, new electric bus charging stations were being introduced across the site. With the depot’s infrastructure evolving, its existing stormwater treatment infrastructure needed to catch up to ensure it could meet the site’s increased treatment requirements.
Part of the existing stormwater infrastructure onsite included a Vortechs® VX5000 GPT and StormFilter® 460 ZPG™ cartridges. Rather than immediately adding new treatment assets to accommodate the anticipated increase in pollution loads, our team assessed the existing infrastructure to determine how we could get more from what was already there.
Maintain, Restore, and Upgrade
Our team completed a full cleanout of the existing system, removing accumulated sediment and addressing the condition of the StormFilter® 460 ZPG™ cartridges.
With the existing infrastructure maintained, attention could then turn to improving treatment performance. Our engineers identified an opportunity to upgrade the filter media.
More Performance from Existing Infrastructure
A total of 65 StormFilter® cartridges incorporating NPSorb media were supplied to replace the existing ZPG™ media.
NPSorb is specifically engineered to target high rates of phosphorous and nitrogen removal and is SQIDEP verified, providing independently verified performance for stormwater treatment applications.
By upgrading the filter media within the existing StormFilter® system, the client could accommodate increased treatment requirements while continuing to make use of infrastructure already installed on site.
Upgrade Where It Counts
As sites evolve, the first question does not always need to be, “What additional infrastructure is required?’’ There may instead be an opportunity to ask: “How can we get more from what is already there?”
In this case, maintaining the system and upgrading its filter media provided the client with a practical, cost-effective pathway to improved stormwater treatment, while minimising additional installation works, site disruption and overall costs.
It’s a simple but effective principle: maintain what’s there, understand what it can do, and upgrade where it counts.
